Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) (MIC)

Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) (MIC) supports culturally and linguistically diverse people and their families, older people, people with disabilities and their carers, community groups and service providers in the Eastern Region of Melbourne to enhance their settlement and access to services and strengthen their participation within the community.

Early Years

MIC provides a range of services and group programs for children and young people. MIC facilitates two multicultural playgroups for parents and their pre-school aged children and two playgroups specifically for Chinese grandparents and their pre-school aged grandchildren. Playgroups provide an opportunity for the parents and grandparents:

  • to meet new people to reduce social isolation,
  • practice English,
  • learn about and connect with service providers, and
  • learn about child development and child rearing in an Australian context.

During COVID-19, all playgroups are being held online, with a mix of live sessions and pre-recorded story-times, craft activities and songs that are posted to closed social media groups.

Youth

MIC facilitates three weekly homework support programs for primary school aged children and three weekly programs for secondary school students from newly arrived refugee and family stream migrant backgrounds. One-to-one tutoring is also available for secondary and tertiary level students.

The programs not only support children and young people to complete homework tasks, they also recognise the interrupted or lack of formal schooling many children from refugee backgrounds face when arriving in Australia and include a range of activities aimed at building English language skills and confidence in the classroom.

Due to COVID-19, all programs are currently being held online and include a mix of games and activities for primary school students and one-to-one tutoring for secondary school students.

For more information about their programs please visit the events calendar below.

If you would like to make a referral, seek support or would like any further information about their programs and services, please phone MIC on 03 9285 4888 or email [email protected]
