Beyond Sparkles and Superheroes - Early Years

2018

The books on the Beyond Sparkles and Superheroes list have been selected to promote positive gender equality messages and celebrate children's individuality.

The early years is an important setting because children are absorbing messages relating to gender. Books and stories are communication and learning tools that can either reinforce or challenge traditional gender stereotypes.

The list is designed to complement other books and traditional stories available in the library.

2020

In response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the Beyond Sparkles and Superheroes project group developed a primary prevention virtual story time, using books from the booklist. The virtual story time ran for 4 weeks and involved a number of the books being read with activities, songs and rhymes to compliment.

The goal was to increase access for families to engage with books and activities that promote gender equity and respectful relationships during Covid-19, through a collaborative approach across the Eastern Metropolitan Region.
