Water in Sport Initiative
This project was funded by VicHealth for 3 years and ran across six Belgravia Leisure Centre Sites included in the Yarra Ranges Municipality:
- Kilsyth Centenary Pool
- Healesville Outdoor Pool
- Belgrave Outdoor Pool
- Lilydale Outdoor Pool
- Monbulk Aquatic Centre, and
- Yarra Recreation Centre.
The project aimed to decrease consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and increase consumption of water at sport and recreational facilities. This project implemented ‘nudges’ which prompt community members to make healthier choices at point of sale.
Other strategies implemented included:
- Decreasing the proportion of ‘red/unhealthy’ drinks to <20%, or
- Removing sugar-sweetened beverages from public display or
- Increasing the availability, accessibility and promotion of ‘green/healthy’ drinks to >50%.
This is one step towards implementing the Healthy Choices Guidelines within sport and recreational facilities. Drinks were perceived as the easiest change to facilitate initially.
