“Friends in the Kitchen” Young Women’s Program

The “Friends in the Kitchen” Young Women’s Program facilitated by the Migrant Information Centre (Eastern Melbourne) ran over 8 weeks in Term 1 of 2019. This pilot program used the platform of cooking to explore cultural identities, expectations, responsibilities at home and gender equity, and connection of mood to food.

The program helped foster a sense of belonging for young women sharing the common experience of being newly arrived and from a refugee background settling in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. A total of ten young women aged 12 to 16 years participated in the program.

The program proved to be an excellent way to build rapport, support the young women to try new things and introduce conversations around important topics in a safe and non-confronting way.
