The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is the nation's leading expert body in health and medical research.

The NHMRC became an independent statutory agency within the portfolio of the Australian Government Minister for Health and Ageing, operating under the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992 (NHMRC Act) on 1 July 2006.

NHMRC has guidelines to help reduce the risk of alcohol harm and improve the health of Australians. The guidelines provide health professionals, policy makers and the Australian community with evidence-based advice on the health effects of drinking alcohol.
